Airfield Lighting Control System – ALCS

Airfield lighting control system (ALCS) is a system that allows airport personnel to control airfield lighting from the airport tower or any other place. ALCS is connected to airfield lights via CCRs and cables. All airfield lights are grouped into few groups (e.g. runway, taxiway, approach, PAPI, apron etc.). ALCS allows to control either complete AGL system or separate groups of lights.

Airfield Lighting Control and Monitoring System – ALCMS

Airfield Lighting Control and Monitoring System (ALCMS) is a more advanced system which allows not only control airfield lighting but monitor technical parameters of AGL system. ALCMS can be presented by Control Unit with manual switch on/off buttons and lighting status indicators; or by computer interface with airfield lighting layout, buttons and indicators on the screen. If taxiway lighting stops working, airport personnel will be notified – usually by blinking indicator – that there is some problem in this particular group of lights.

S4GA ALCMS with Individual Light Monitoring

S4GA ALCMS allows users not only monitor current status of entire lighting system or groups of lights. Every airfield light in the system is monitored. If there is low battery level or the light does not work – airport personnel is informed via SMS and on the screen where exactly the problem is.

Power Independent from Control

In traditional hard-wired AGL systems, both ALCMS and airfield lighting are powered from the same power source – MAINS power supply. Moreover, control over airfield lights (in other words, data sharing) is also done via electrical cables. In case of loss of MAINS power supply, or fire in a substation, or ALCMS cables damage, the airport loses control over airfield lights. This is critical situation for airport which causes stop of all flight procedures.

In S4GA ALCMS, radio network – not electrical cables – is used to control the lights. Every lighting unit is connected to other lights and to ALCMS via wireless mesh network. Batteries are used to power airfield lights. No cables, no CCRs, no MAINS power supply required in such system. Even if ALCMS computer program stops working, S4GA solar airfield lighting will keep operating. Moreover, lighting control will be performed by UR-201 Control and Monitoring Unit or UR-101 Handheld Controller.

In worst case scenario when radio network fails, S4GA solar runway lighting is still under control : every lighting unit is equipped with a manual emergency ON/OFF button. It is enough to switch on one button and all the rest lights will switch on automatically.
