For airports that operate at night – perform night flight operations – it’s a must to have airport lighting which includes airfield lights, airport terminal lighting, approach lights and other lighting systems. If an airport operates at night on a regular basis, has scheduled night flights than permanent runway lighting should be installed.
However, if flighting procedures occur from time to time, seasonally, or for any other reason airport does not have permanent lighting – then a temporary airport lighting can be used.
Temporary airport lights are often used during runway rehabilitation or any other airport construction works that require closing and marking airfield areas. For marking obstructions and barricades on airfield, temporary obstruction lights are used. During repair of taxiway or taxiway lighting system, temporary taxiway lights are used.
If the main runway is closed for construction works, airport can continue flight operations by using taxiway or the second runway temporarily. In this case, temporary runway edge lights and temporary threshold lights (runway end lights) are installed on a taxiway for the construction works period.
Temporary airport lighting – or temporary airfield lighting – includes temporary runway lights, temporary taxiway lights, temporary threshold lights (runway end lights), temporary obstacle lights (obstruction aviation lihts), and even portable PAPI lights.
Portable runway lights are usually battery powered airfield lights that are stored in a hangar. The lights are used from time to time by airport personnel to temporarily illuminate runway: support night operations or flights in cloudy weather daytime.
