Czech Republic: S4GA FREE Trial Program for Regional Airport

When the management team of a regional airport in the Czech Republic began searching for a reliable, low-maintenance, and cost-effective airfield lighting solution, they knew they needed to think outside the box. Traditional lighting systems were expensive to install and maintain, and they required extensive electrical infrastructure. So, they decided to take a chance on solar-powered airfield lighting and joined S4GA’s Free Trial Program to test out the technology!

feasibility study

The primary objective of the solar feasibility study was to provide the airport with accurate information regarding the safe number of hours per day that the solar airfield lighting can be activated at the selected intensity level. If the solar AGL system is operated for no more than the specified simulated hours, it can function without any disruptions caused by power outages or drained batteries. Check the number of daily operating hours depending on the month below.

The Feasibility Study utilized the PVGIS system, which is an EU-approved online tool that employs satellite-based solar historical data to simulate the performance of solar-powered equipment in a specific location!

On-site testing

During the trial period from 30.05.2022 to 20.06.2022, the weather was unfavorable, with intermittent rain and cloudy skies (the average level of cloud cover was 57%). Despite the weather not being particularly sunny during the trial, the solar-powered airfield lights worked without any interruptions, providing reliable and effective illumination throughout the airport.

During S4GA FREE Trial in the Czech Republic, all lights have been tested in dusk-to-dawn mode (8 hrs/day). Runway and Taxiway Lights have been activated for 13 hrs in total during 20 days of trial period.

During the trial period battery level of every light is monitored. Battery level is measured every time when it changes for min 1%. Every hour measured battery levels are transferred from Control and Monitoring Unit to the S4GA server for analysis.

CONCLUSIONS

The airport’s lighting requirements were 4 hours per day. However, solar-powered lamps were found to be capable of providing illumination for up to 8 hours, even when more than 50% of the sky was covered in clouds. The airport’s technical team was impressed with the system’s ease of installation, which they found to be straightforward and intuitive, helping save valuable time and resources.

  • All solar lights have successfully passed solar autonomy test;
  • All lights have functioned as expected;
  • During S4GA FREE Trial in the Czech Republic, average daily time when light was activated was 8 hrs/day – 80% of time lights were activated at 60% intensity level and 20% of timeat 100% intensity level.

The airport’s management team was thrilled with the results of the trial – the S4GA solar-powered airfield lighting system was not only reliable, but it was also low maintenance and cost-effective. It was clear that this technology could help the airport save money and reduce their environmental impact without compromising on safety or efficiency!
